Cravings and Gratitude

Today I typed an email to my mother. My friend who is coming to visit in November has generously
Lydia and I together, summer 2012
offered some suitcase space for my parents to send me stuff and my mom's been on me to send her a list so she can slowly start buying here and there. I finally sent it off today.

Lydia, my friend, is coming in time for Thanksgiving, so stuffing leads the list.

Writing that list and also writing Ryan a grocery list today had me missing a lot of my American foods. The cravings come and go, but typically when they go another one follows quickly on its heels.

That doesn't mean India doesn't have some great food, it does. But food from home is what you miss.

Still, between this and the loneliness and other things going on lately, I've been trying to really be more conscious to be grateful. Sometimes you can focus too hard on what you wish you had, and forget to be grateful for what you do have...

I read something like "The key to happiness is gratitude" and think it's very true and it's a Biblical concept as well. It's hard to do, but if you're feeling unhappy finding things to be grateful for can make a lot of difference. I've not been that unhappy, but I could be happier, but I'm finding stopping when I start feeling discontent and reminding myself of my blessings makes such a difference.

Of course, that's the whole point behind my "thankful" posts, but I've been trying to make it a more daily practice, instead of just weekly.

What's been going on with you?

  1. Taking the time to remind yourself of your blessings does help on the days when it's not so easy to remember those blessings! And looking forward to a visit from a friend and a few treats from home is definitely a blessing!

Thanks so much for comments, they delight me! Please keep your comments civil and while I read every comment, I reserve the right to delete ones that are especially negative. Thanks!
